Ages 2 and Under

Limit screen time for children under 2 years of age. Babies and toddlers learn  best through interactions with others and their surroundings. Learn tips on how to manage your child's screen time from an early age.

Kids under the age of 2 learn best when they explore the world around them. Take time each day to play and read books with your child. Quality time spent interacting and playing with you, their family, and other people can boost their brain development and help connect them with others for healthy growth.

When young children spend time on screens, they miss out on opportunities to play, interact with others, and sleep. This may harm their growth and development. Reducing screen time leaves more time for face-to-face interactions.

Screen time should be limited and only used when an adult is there to supervise, talk, and teach, like during family video chats when parents are present.

Kids ages 18-24 months old can learn from high quality educational screen time. Parents should always watch or play with them to help reinforce what they learn for healthy growth and development.

Look for programs that are interactive, social, and non-violent. Sesame Street is a great example! Children should be encouraged to think and respond to content. Common Sense Media provides ratings and reviews of program content that can help you choose high quality options.

It may be tempting to let young children use screens alone while you are busy. Do not let children under 2 have screen time by themselves. Consider setting up books and age appropriate toys on the floor for unstructured playtime or listening to podcasts or music as alternatives.

Set a good example by showing habits that you want the child to follow. For example, this could mean having meals without phones or keeping devices in another room when it is time for bed. By doing these things, you can help your child learn and build good digital habits.
