Bike Safety Tips
A bike ride is a fun activity for the whole family!
Help everyone have fun and be safe by following these tips:
Always wear a helmet
- Wear a properly fitted helmet whenever you ride a bike, scooter, or participate in any other wheeled activity.
- Head size determines helmet size, not age. Measure your head to get the right size of helmet.
- Wear your helmet level with the ground. The straps should make a V below your ears. The helmet should not move when you shake your head.
- For more tips on how to fit a helmet, see our helmet fitting instructions.
- Always replace a helmet that has been involved in a crash.
Check your bike
- Make sure your bike is the right size for you. Your feet should be flat on the ground when sitting on the seat.
- Check the tires for proper inflation.
- Check the pedals and seat to be sure they are tight.
- Check to see if the brakes work.
Be seen
- Wear bright colored and reflective clothing.
- Use reflectors and lights on your bike.
- Make eye contact with drivers before crossing the street.
Follow the rules of the road
- Use hand signals for turns and stops.
- Ride in the same direction as traffic.
- Obey all signs and traffic lights.
- Walk your bike across busy intersections.
