Fire Safety Tips

December 01, 2016 at 4:44 AM

Never think, not for one minute, that fire and burn related injury and death can not happen to you and your family.  It can and it will.  No one ever plans to be in a fire or to be burned.  What you can do, however, is to take the steps necessary to be informed and to help equip everyone in your home to know what to do in the event of a fire or an event where someone is burned.  Knowledge, preparation, practice, and safety products are your best tools for preventing fire and burn related injuries from ever happening.

  • Take the time to develop  and practice a fire escape plan for you and your family.  Involve all family members in creating  your family’s fire exit plan.  Use a very large piece of paper where your children can help you draw the layout of your home, identifying the windows and doors that allow you to get out  of every room.
  • Identify a meeting place where everyone goes once outside your home and have your children draw a picture of the meeting place on your family’s fire escape plan.
  • Everyone in your family should be able to identify at least two ways out of every room in your  house and should also see where and how smoke alarms can help (or may be needed) to alert everyone of a fire.
  • Smoke alarms should be installed inside and outside every sleeping area and on every floor.
  • A carbon monoxide detector should also be installed on each level your home including the basement.
  • Be sure to include every one of all ages and abilities in your family in the regular practicing of your fire escape plan.
