Safe Sleep

Alone - Share a room with baby, but not the same bed, chair, or couch.

On My Back - Always put the baby on their back when putting them down to sleep.

In My Crib - Babies should sleep in a crib, portable play yard, or bassinet.

The mattress your baby sleeps on should be firm and flat. You can use a tightly fitted sheet, but double check that it fits the size of the mattress.

Do not put anything extra in the crib with the baby. This includes blankets, stuffed animals, toys, crib bumpers, pillows, or other items.

The baby should share a room with you for at least six months. Make sure you keep the crib, portable play yard, or bassinet near your bed and away from windows.

When baby begins to show signs of rolling over, stop swaddling them to help prevent suffocation. Start using wearable blankets or infant sleepers for baby during sleep instead.

Pacifiers help remind babies to suck, swallow, and breathe during sleep. Consider using one when putting your baby down to sleep. If breastfeeding, wait until breastfeeding is well established before offering a pacifier.

If your baby falls asleep while in a swing or infant seat, move them to a crib, portable play yard, or bassinet.

If your baby falls asleep in their car seat during travel, move them to a firm, flat surface such as a crib, portable play yard, or bassinet once you have arrived at your destination.

Avoid smoking or vaping around the baby. Secondhand smoke increases the baby's risk of SIDS.

Teach anyone who will be taking care of your baby about safe sleep practices, including family members or babysitters.
