Ages 1 and Under

Children should remain rear facing in a car seat until at least age 2, but they are the safest if they rear face as long as the weight and height restrictions on their car seat allow. Some car seats will only work for certain ages, and some are are designed to grow with your child over time.

A child who is less than 1 year old must always travel in a rear-facing car seat. Pick a seat that fits your baby's height and weight and fits correctly in the car. There are 3 kinds of rear-facing car seats to choose from to help keep baby safe.

Infant Car Seat- This car seat is designed for newborns and small infants and can only be used rear-facing in the vehicle. Many babies will outgrow this car seat before their first birthday. When the baby outgrows the seat, we recommend that you get the baby a convertible car seat or an all-in-one and continue to use it rear-facing.

Convertible Car Seat- This kind of car seat can switch from being rear facing to forward facing with a harness and a tether.

All-in-One Car Seat-This seat changes from a rear-facing car seat to a forward-facing car seat with a harness and a tether. It also changes to a booster seat for older kids.
