Fire & Burn Safety

All children are at high risk of injury or death from burns, especially children under the age of 5. Help prevent burn injuries with these helpful tips to help keep your family safe!

Install smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors in all sleeping areas and on all levels of your home. Change batteries and test alarms regularly according to the manufacturer instructions.

Keep matches and lighters locked up and out of reach of children to help prevent fires and burn injuries.

Watch your food when cooking. Turn pot handles toward the back of the stove to help prevent children from reaching them and getting burned. Add safety knob covers and a stove guard to help block the knobs burners from little hands.

Do not overload electrical outlets. Replace old or frayed electrical cords to help prevent fires. Use safety covers in electrical outlets to help prevent children from getting burned or shocked.

Keep anything that can burn at least 3 feet away from heat sources. Be sure to always supervise children around heat sources to help prevent them from getting burned. Put out fires in the fireplace before going to sleep or leaving your home. Think about adding a fire place guard to help prevent children from falling in or touching the fireplace.

Blow out candles when you leave the room or before you go to bed. Flashlights are a safer choice to use when the power goes out.

Set your water heater to no more than 120°F
to help prevent scald burns. Both children and the elderly have thinner skin and can burn more easily. Use a bath water thermometer to check that water is at a safe temperature to use.

Keep emergency numbers by each phone and programmed into each cell phone. Make a fire escape plan with two ways out of each room and decide on a safe meeting place outside. Practice the plan regularly with all the members of your household.

Learn how to prepare to escape quickly and safely from a fire to help avoid injury:

     ----Move low under smoke

----Never run or hide from a firefighter

     ----"Stop, drop and roll" or

----"Lock, drop and roll" (from a wheelchair )

----CALL 911 to report a fire or an emergency
