Sun Safety

Playing outside is great exercise! Remember, you can even get a sunburn on a cloudy day. Before you head out the door, make sure everyone has their sunscreen on!

Sunscreen: Use sunscreen with an SPF (Sun Protection Factor) of at least 30 or higher. This helps protect you from the sun's ultraviolet rays (UV rays). Put sunscreen on 15 to 30 minutes before going outside to give it time to soak into the skin. Reapply sunscreen every 2 hours and after swimming, sweating, or using a towel.

Protective Clothing: Protect your head, face, and ears with a wide brimmed hat. Cover Up! Loose fitting clothing is one of the best ways to help protect your skin from the sun. When choosing clothes, look for things that have an Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) of 50 or above. Wear darker clothes when possible as they provide more protection from the sun than lighter colors. Wear sunglasses that have 100% UV protection to help keep your eyes safe.

Stay Hydrated: Drink water often throughout the day! Take lots of breaks in the shade or inside where it is cool to help prevent heat stroke. Limit your time in the sun between the hours of    10 AM to 4 PM when the sun's rays are the strongest.

Sun's Rays: Use sunscreen and use extra care near water, sand, and snow. These areas reflect the sun's rays and you can sunburn more quickly.
